"IS IT BLACK OR IS IT BROWN?!"

A film featuring a rampaging bear with a stomach full of cocaine was always going to have its detractors.

Based on the remarkable 1985 true story of an American brown bear that died after accidentally ingesting more than 30 kilograms of Colombian snow in a drug drop gone wrong, even the most open-minded viewer could be justified in questioning whether this amusing piece of general knowledge was sufficient to base an entire feature film on.

Cocaine Bear's preposterous premise invites valid questions regarding the applicability of the film as a horror-comedy as well as the suitability of the bear as an antagonist. Elizabeth Banks' film dispels most of these concerns with the initial bear attack sequence, depicting the hilariously gruesome demise of Hannah Hoekstra's Elsa as she hikes in a national park with her boyfriend Olaf.

For starters, the whole scene is extremely funny. The initial sight of a coked-up bear head-butting trees rarely fails to elicit a laugh, while the panicked bickering between the hunted pair makes for further chuckle-worthy material. The gruesome sight of Elsa's severed leg after she is devoured also underlined that the film's horror-centric elements wouldn't be neglected entirely in favour of comedy.
