2. Brendan Informs Noa Of His Intentions - Fresh
"I'm gonna tell you now. I'm gonna sell your meat."
Mimi Cave's Fresh was one of 2022's more pleasant horror based surprises. Carried by stellar performances from Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones, the film follows a young woman who begins a relationship with a debonair stranger - only to make the discovery that her new beau is a cannibal when she awakens to find herself in chains.
Fresh's early goings are superb, crisply shot and enticingly paced. It's also gripping from the very beginning - the opening credits haven't even rolled before Edgar-Jones' Noa collapses under the influence of a spiked drink. With that being said, a moment that grabs the viewer's attention is undoubtedly the sequence immediately afterwards, where Noa awakens and reality sinks in.
Stan's "Steve" (later unmasked as "Brendan") reassures the panicked Noa that he isn't going to assault or murder her, before revealing his harrowing true intentions - he plans to harvest the meat from her body to sell for profit. The sick irony of the situation Noa finds herself in is that her tormentor intends on keeping her alive as long as possible, prolonging her torturous circumstances.
It's a terrifying window into just how gruesome Stan's character truly is, setting the tone for the remainder of the movie. The cannibal chuckles and mocks Noa as the hysterical woman screams, before leaving with her a final soundbite to chew over.
"Don't be so dramatic."
