7. Morpheus Is Dead - The Matrix Resurrections

Ghostbusters Afterlife
Warner Bros.

The Matrix Resurrections is admittedly a massively divisive movie, though one of the chief complaints from fans was the absence of two of the series' most prominent actors - Hugo Weaving and especially Laurence Fishburne.

Even so, many fans hoped that Fishburne would appear for a surprise cameo as Morpheus or, in the very least, the door might be left open for him to return in a sequel.

Well, Lana Wachowski unfortunately bummed everybody out by revealing mid-way through the film that Morpheus died many years prior during a conflict with the machines, and a statue has since been erected in his honour in the new human city of Io.

For fans who were already on the fence about the movie at this point, this might've been the punch in the gut that caused them to turn against the film for its equally baffling remainder.

Morpheus is such a fantastic character, and considering that the story found ways to conveniently resurrect Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) despite 60 years passing since the events of Revolutions, it felt like a copout to just kill Morpheus off-screen.

Sure, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II tries hard to fill Fishburne's shoes as the new digital proxy of Morpheus, but he's just not the same.
