9. Cutting Toy Story 2’s Casting Couch Joke
Disney have generated headlines recently by removing a casting couch joke from the latest Blu-Ray of Toy Story 2.
As the credits roll, we see Stinky Pete seducing two Barbie dolls by promising he can get them a part in Toy Story 3.
While there’s nothing wrong with having adult jokes in there, this is essentially a joke about sexual assault, or at the very least harassment.
It wouldn’t really fly these days even in a movie actually for adults, so you can understand them wanting to cut it from Toy Story 2; it would never have been allowed in 4, for example.
It’s the sort of joke that used to be okay because, as a society, we sort of turned a blind eye to this issue without thinking about the trauma executives could inflict on young starlets. There's also the matter of simple disbelief or denial.
Sure, everybody said this kind of thing happened behind the scenes, but it all felt like alligators in the sewers. We said they were there, but we didn’t want to believe it. With #MeToo bringing the uncomfortable truth out into the open, Disney have made the sensible choice to cut the gag.
