10 Examples Of How Progressive Disney Has Become

5. Tackling Social Issues

Disney have actually been ahead of their competition on TV for a while now. While Andi Mack was a watershed moment, the Disney Channel itself has been pretty good a reflecting the diversity of society.

Zac & Cody are raised by a single mother, Good Luck Charlie featured a gay couple and Doc McStuffins centres around a young black girl who wants to be a doctor, just like her mother.

In fact, when it comes to POC representation, Disney Channel has The Proud Family, Twitches, The Cheetah Girls, Corey In The House and That’s So Raven to call upon. Raven is set for a reboot too, with Raven starring as a divorced single mother.

Social attitudes are being shown on the big screen too. Big Hero 6 has a diverse cast reflective of its San Fransokyo setting, and its core messages are that mental health matters as much as physical health, it’s good to talk, and it’s okay for boys to cry.

Zootopia too is an allegory for social justice, dealing with complex themes like racism, corruption, bigotry, police prejudice towards certain groups and screams it’s message ‘you can do whatever you put your mind to’ from the rooftops.
