10 Excellent Films That Don't Actually Have A Plot

7. The Big Lebowski (1998)

Director: Joel and Ethan Coen Set in the early-nineties, The Big Lebowski is about Jeffery €˜The Dude€™ Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who after being mistaken for a man with the same name becomes involved in the hostage ransoming of Big Lebowski€™s daughter, Bunny. Though that definitely sounds like a plot to the conventional eye, the events of the film are so randomly tied together that it feels more like a parody of storytelling than a genuine attempt at plot. As Joel and Ethan Coen have said themselves in the past, while The Big Lebowski does have a plot, it€™s a €œhopelessly complex plot that€™s ultimately unimportant€. It€™s there because it€™s expected to be there for this kind of film, but it€™s more of a formality than anything. The plot keeps the action moving and the characters motivated, nothing more. In fact, some of the events in the film are so arbitrarily connected that they may as well be completely random. At one point, The Dude is thrown out of a speeding cab after an argument with the driver. Coming to a stop on the sidewalk, he looks up and sees Bunny driving past in a red sports car, having evidently faked her own kidnapping. While technically these two events are linked, the sheer improbability of the encounter renders the plot completely irrelevant.
