Budget: $258 millionGross Earnings: $288 million Disneys astronomically expensive John Carter was blamed for the $160 million swing in Disney profits in the second fiscal quarter of 2012. This catastrophic mega-blockbuster led to the resignation of poor old Rich Ross (not to be confused with Rick), the head of Walt Disney Studios who wasnt even in that position when the production of the ill-fated Mars adventure started. John Carter was far from a bad movie it had some visually stunning set-pieces and action sequences. However, the material its based on means that it always feels derivative of other blockbuster sci-fi flicks. We all felt like wed witnessed the story of the military captain transported to Mars several hundred times before. Derivative or not, the amount of money Disney had piled into the production and marketing of John Carter meant that it was considered one of the biggest box office flops of all time. The film may have finally broken even with DVD sales but its unlikely that well be seeing John again any time soon.
