10 Failed Space Operas That Bombed With Mainstream Audiences
5. Millions Of Fans Cried Out - Serenity (2005)
Prior to directing the gargantuan hit Avengers Assemble, Joss Whedon garnered legions of fans (dubbed Whedonites online) for his quirky, sass-laden forays in television and films. However, as Titan A.E. proved, Whedon doesnt always have the Midas touch when it comes to the box office. Despite a short run of episodes, Whedons sci-fi western television series, Firefly, gave rise to an extremely loyal, cult-like fan base. Fans continued interest in Firefly post cancellation convinced Universal Pictures to take a gamble and produce a cinematic follow up to the series: 2005s Serenity. Anticipation ran high for the cinematic continuation of the Firefly saga. Universal went so far as to create buzz by offering sneak previews of the feature in 15 major cities. The trailer generated substantial Internet hype while numerous marketing tie-ins stoked the flames of anticipation. Many pundits predicted Serenity would take the number one spot at the box office. Unfortunately, Serenitys ticket sales did not live up to the hype. Even though it debuted at number 2 at the box office, Serenity failed to recoup its budget during its theatrical run. Eventually, Serenitys home media release found an audience and fans, finally, got to see the stellar conclusion to the Firefly saga.
