10 Famous Actors Who Tried To Direct Movies (And Failed)

8. The Lost City - Andy Garcia

Andy Garcia was born in Cuba and it was a longtime dream of his to make The Lost City, a film about a nightclub owner during the Cuban Revolution. It took Garcia sixteen years to put the project together, which probably should have given him the hint that his original three hundred page script was not destined to be made into a successful movie. Nonetheless, Garcia persisted, cut his script by more than half, and managed to get Dustin Hoffman and Bill Murray to co-star with him. None of that helped. The Lost City ended up a bloated, two hour and twenty minute bore that ends with a bizarre four-minute dance sequence. It only made about a quarter of its modest $9.6 million budget at the box office, with critics "awarding" it a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Garcia has since directed television episodes, but he has had difficulty getting a biopic about Ernest Hemingway off the ground as his next feature as a director. It was supposed to start shooting in January 2013 with Anthony Hopkins starring as Hemingway, but never did. Garcia has recently said that he is hoping to finally shoot it this summer with Jon Voight as Hemingway instead. But who knows? It could take another sixteen years.
