10 Famous Films That Failed To Turn A Profit Thanks To Hollywood Accounting

2. Fahrenheit 9/11

Dog Eat Dog Films

Michael Moore’s anti-Dubya Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 was a surprise hit in 2004, raking in a reported $222.4 million on a modest budget of just $6 million and staking its place in cinema history as the highest grossing documentary of all time.

Funny then that Moore ending up taking film producer brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein (go figure) to court in 2011 for monies owed to the tune of $2.7 million.

Despite an agreement between Moore and the Weinsteins to split profits 50/50, the filmmaker had received just $20 million while the Weinsteins had made grossly extravagant expenditure claims such as the cost of flying a single passenger via private jet from the US to Europe. The lawsuit was eventually settled out of court the following year for an undisclosed sum.

Nonetheless, it didn’t stop Moore working with the Weinsteins again. In fact, the brothers Weinstein have worked with Moore on the majority of his documentaries since Fahrenheit 9/11 including his latest film which, funnily enough, is named Fahrenheit 11/9 and critiques the USA’s latest idiot president Trump.
