10 Famous Movies That Ruined The Reputations Of Classic Films

8. Sleep With Me Has Tarantino Fully Homoeroticise Top Gun

No one's going to argue that there is a strong homoerotic undertone to Top Gun (it shows the origins of a bromance, long before that term was a thing), but it tends to dominate the reputation of a film that offers plenty of other action that'll take your breath away. It's a slow shift in the film's reputation that has, if anything, helped it last; as an emblem of male friendship the film speaks to more people than a simple Cold War jet fighter would.

He's not solely responsible, but one person who had a bigger influence than most on this was Quentin Tarantino. Renowned early on as a movie head with a desire to be an actor (despite his acting range only going as far as Quentin Tarantino), he pops up in the otherwise forgotten rom-com Sleep With Me to spout a self-written reading of the film, stating its all about "a man's struggle with his own homosexuality." In depth and verbose, it's incredibly convincing.

The biggest problem with it is that a central part of the argument relies on a massive misquote. The last thing Iceman says to Maverick at the end of Top Gun is the awesome "you can be my wingman anytime", but Tarantino quotes it as "you can ride my tail any time"; that's a lot more homoerotic.

It was admittedly difficult to check quotes in a pre-internet age, but it goes to show that the director's assessment of the film may be a little off.
