10 Fan Edits That Totally Transform Famous Films
1. Cosmogony
We promised fan edits which radically transform films, and we hope we've delivered. We've had edits that change the genre of films, which turn failures into unqualified successes, which blend several different films into something completely new. Cosmogony is something completely different. Cosmogony takes a handful of recognisable source materials, and mashes them up into something totally different. It takes films as varied as 2001: A Space Odyssey, There Will Be Blood and Jurassic Park III, and turns them into a new movie that hasn't got anything in common with any of those.
Another project from the grindhouse-crazy The Man Behind The Mask, this one is a heck of a lot more ambitious. Boasting the enigmatic tagline "A fanedit about us", the official synopsis elucidates further: "Cosmogony is a fanedit using a lot of movies to tell the story of humanity and nature, from the creation of life to wherever we are going."
The Man himself goes into his intentions in piecing this new film together, saying "I thought it would be cool to use all the great movies about the various wars and iconic moments in human history." He's basically made The Tree Of Life, only instead of getting Brad Pitt in the same film with CGI dinosaurs, he's done it with existing footage. That's crazy! He's taken something like a dozen films, all made at totally different times and completely different genres, and somehow weaved them together into a whole, a transcendent (and more than a little pretentious) piece of cinema about the history of humanity, and where we might go next.
With Daniel Day Lewis talking about milkshakes whilst Lou Reed & Metallica plays in the background. That's...certainly something. And definitely a fan edit which radically transforms not just one, but a whole mess of films. Isn't technology amazing?
