10 Fan Service Movie Moments That Went TOO FAR

The Exorcist: Believer wasn't merely content to be an aggressively forgettable legacy sequel - it also had to actively insult anyone who loved the original movie, enough that it's probably more apt to call it fan disservice.

The new Exorcist brings original franchise protagonist Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) back for a small supporting role, as she attempts to help new hero Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.) deal with the demonic possession of his daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) and her friend Katherine (Olivia O'Neill).

But when Chris attempts to exorcise the demon from Katherine, Katherine stabs Chris' eyes with a cross, blinding her.

It's an utterly miserable outcome for one of the most distinctive heroines in horror cinema history, and it goes without saying that giving a legacy character life-changing injuries in an attempt to lend more import to a thoroughly naff new movie comes off as overwhelmingly desperate.

For Burstyn's part, she was totally upfront about the fact that she only appeared in the film because Universal agreed to fund an acting scholarship on her behalf. And so, at least something good came out of this dreck.
