The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, three of which it won. Spielberg did not receive an award disappointingly, but the film won awards for Best Sound, Best Editing and Best original score. It was also up for Best Picture but lost to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest featuring Jack Nicholson.

During the ceremony, John Williams was actually conducting the orchestra and can be seen having to run back and forth to receive his awards. Without his legendary score for the movie, some say it would not have become such a well-known film. The song still features in swimming pools across the globe almost 47 years later, proving the effectiveness of Williams' E-F-E-F motif on the piano.

Did you know that Spielberg initially thought that Williams' was joking when he played the tune for him? Little did he know that it would become a significant part of the film's success.

The two other Oscars for Jaws went to Verna Fields for editing and Robert L. Hoyt, Roger Heman, Earl Madery, and John Carter for sound.

As a fun fact, it's estimated that over 23.25 million Brits saw it in cinemas when it was released. That's over half of the country's population back in 1975.
