10 Feel Good Movies With Heartbreaking Hidden Secrets

6. Grease

Ferris Bueller

The ending of Grease isn’t necessarily all that heartbreaking as it is almost obnoxiously weird. The movie ends with Danny & Sandy’s car flying off into the sky, which is clearly a metaphor for something, but exactly what is anyone’s guess. A popular dark theory on that moment suggests that the metaphor is in fact Heaven.

Right at the start of the film, Sandy and Danny are frolicking in the ocean, as 30 year old teenagers in a cheesy musical are wont to do. The theory goes that during this gleeful frolicking, Sandy hits her head on one of the rocks and ends up going underwater and drowning.

The reason everyone is singing is because her oxygen deprived brain is causing her to become delirious; the flying car is her finally sailing off beyond this world into whatever comes next.

A frequent criticism of the ending is Sandy’s transformation into the bar girl, seemingly changing everything about herself in order to please Danny. If it is indeed just her own fantasy, it does at least recolour that, giving her far more agency. There is the trade off of her being dead though, which doesn’t sound ideal for Sandy.
