Peter Benchley's hit novel Jaws served as the basis for one of the greatest films of all time and the first legitimate summer Blockbuster.

But anyone who's actually read it knows that it's awful. The fact that its film adaptation is such a masterpiece is proof positive that the very integral process of streamlining in adaptation works. The novel is clunky, poorly written, filled with subplots that overstuff the story including an absurd corruption scandal involving the mayor and the mafia

It's just a mess that, to make matters worse, ends with one of the most unsatisfying climaxes in any novel. The shark, approaching a stranded Sherrif Brody, just succumbs to its wounds and dies. However ludicrous that explosion at the end of the film is, there's no question it gets your heart racing.

One of the major changes to the novel was in the character of Matt Hooper, who is still very much written as Richard Dreyfuss plays him. Hooper is a wealthy brat, but it's Dreyfuss' quirky charm that make us like side with him

But Hooper in the novel possesses none of Dreyfuss' redeeming qualities, He's insufferable To make matters worse, he has an affair with Sherriff Brody's wife, which the Sherriff kind-of knows about when he fails to save Hooper from the cage.

Kenny Hedges is carbon-based. So I suppose a simple top 5 in no order will do: Halloween, Crimes and Misdemeanors, L.A. Confidential, Billy Liar, Blow Out He has his own website - thefilmreal.com - and is always looking for new writers with differing views to broaden the discussion.
