The Film: Gangs of New York Amsterdam Vallon, fresh out of Hell Gate Orphanage, returns to New York's Five Points to avenge the death of his father at the hands of the William Cutting - a vicious gang leader and politician. He infiltrates the gang, very quickly realising the brutal regime, in order to get close enough to act on his revenge. Set during the gestation of modern New York, Scorsese's film is rich with atmosphere and the violence of the time. The Character: William Cutting - aka Bill The Butcher An antonym to the previous entry, Bill The Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis) has a tongue as sharp as the meat cleavers he brandishes. At one point - bullet in chest - The Butcher assures a would-be assassin that he'll teach him to speak English with his knife as the man prays for his life in his own mother-tongue. Whether in battle or in the confines of his hospitality, Bill's intensity remains full. He's a true patriot and will shed all of the blood required to protect his mother land - demonstrated ferociously time after time in brutal scene after brutal scene - making this man unpredictable and uncompromising. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTapR73pfrY
