7. The Mummy
Stephen Sommers' 1999 fantasy action film revolving around a rampaging, infamous mummy named Imhotep is a loose remake of the 1932 Boris Karloff starring original. Whereas the 1932 version focussed mainly on elements of horror, the 1999 version (and its fun sequel and abhorrent sequel to that one) starred Brendan Fraser, so its obvious that its going to be more interested in light-hearted fantastical action that will annoy some and charm many. Sommers' The Mummy is one of those films that you will watch to the very end if you stumble across it on the television on one rainy afternoon. It's a guilty pleasure to many, and whereas some cinephiles will constantly argue that it devalues the original, nobody can deny the popularity and the success of this take on the franchise. It goes in a completely new direction than the original, and surely that's when a remake has the right and the clarity to exist. The Mummy is set to be remade for a third time, but details are currently slim. We are yet to know whether it will involve any of the cast that featured in this trilogy (if so, I'm on board). It's also unknown whether it's going to be an action/comedy/fantasy hybrid, or more horror oriented like the original, or perhaps even something completely different. The Mummy: The Musical, anyone?
