10 Film Villains We Secretly Wanted To Win

2. Bill The Butcher €“ Gangs Of New York

Daniel Day-Lewis is the rare breed of actor who ceases to be Daniel Day-Lewis when on set. Since his superb turn in My Left Foot back in 1989 Daniel Day-Lewis has established himself as one of the best actors of all-time, garnering himself a deserved 3 Academy Awards for Best Actor. Easily his best performance to have not received an Oscar was in Scorsese€™s Gangs Of New York where he stole the show as Bill the Butcher. Every time Day-Lewis appeared on screen, his William €˜Bill the Butcher€™ Cutting demanded the attention of audiences. The physicality and undeniable charisma of the irksomely patriotic, political kingmaker mean that it€™s hard to not get behind him. He may be a deranged crime boss but Day-Lewis€™ performance is so electrifying that it€™s impossible to not sympathise with his cause. This sympathy with the bad guy isn€™t because of a failure on the part of Leonardo DiCaprio€™s Amsterdam Vallon, who is a perfectly adequate protagonist. It€™s just that Day-Lewis€™ character is so much more captivating that we are forced to secretly support him. His dying words after he is hit with shrapnel during the New York draft riots are typically epic €“ "thank God, I die a true American€. Heaven knows how DiCaprio received top billing over Day-Lewis.
