8. State Property (2002)
State Property is what we would refer to as a "hood classic". In other words, it's obviously not for everybody. The film is essentially a by-the-numbers tale of a young drug dealer with aspirations of making it big. The dealer in question (named Beans) eventually goes on to make millions in the drug game but not before he comes up against some serious opposition. The film is notable for starring the bulk of the Roc-A-Fella Records roster of the early 2000's. You had everybody from Beanie Sigel, Omillio Sparks, Young Chris, Young Neef, Memphis Bleek, Amil, DJ Clue, and even the head honcho himself Dame Dash. Heck, even Jay-Z shows up for one of the funniest cameos of all time. The problem with trying to critique a film such as this is context. In order to truly appreciate this film you have to be at least somewhat familiar with the real-life Jay-Z or Beanie Sigel. There are so many in-jokes and references that would go completely over your head if you didn't follow any of the film's stars. It would be like judging The Dark Knight Rises without ever having seen a Batman movie before. It just isn't done.
