10 Films Inspired By Real Life Events (That Never Actually Happened)
4. The Mothman Prophecies Wasn't Even Related To The Actual Myth
This Richard Gere starrer claimed to be based on true events that took place in Point Pleasant in the runup to a fatal bridge collapse.
Yet The Mothman Prophecies film claimed that the collapse was never explained which was an outright lie.
The collapse took place during 1971 and killed 46 people as the result of a suspension problem. The book was not written and published until four years later in 1975 and conveniently chose to omit this detail, as did the film.
Furthermore, The actual Mothman sightings occurred years before the bridge even collapsed, from 1966 until 1967, throwing further shade on whether or not any of the film's claims to be true could be taken seriously.
But the film isn't even set during this period at all and takes place during the early 2000s when it was filmed, just to add further confusion as to why the marketing team felt insisting the entire thing was based on a true story was ever a good idea in the first place?
