10 Films That Don't Live Up To Great Premises
3. Sucker Punch
Prior to Sucker Punch, Zack Snyder had directed Dawn of the Dead and 300, one a style-over-substance remake of a film full of social commentary and one a very faithful graphic novel adaptation. Both were successful, with fans of the source material even being mostly okay with the films. Some nitpicked, but the general consensus was that Snyder had a good eye. He may not have much to add to the discussion, but he can make things look nice.
Sucker Punch was his chance to prove there was more to him than just a pretty face. His first original script, he could finally prove himself an intellectual talent as well as a visual one - the trailers promised it'd be a pleasure to look at.
Alas, he wasn't interested in proving himself beyond what he was, and his follow-up features were equally surface level. But Sucker Punch was precisely its title, a surprisingly awful video game that had side quests and the same sense of redundancy one gets when they don't shut their system down for an afternoon.
