When the Allies triumphed over the Third Reich and the Japanese Empire in 1945, a new international world order was established, but it was one that, thanks to the Cold War, would break down within years. Another casualty would be the harmony within western democracies that was to be thrown into jeopardy as a result of a liberal wave that swept the 1960s.

Enter Melville Farr, a gay lawyer approached by a former lover who is being blackmailed. Bear in mind that homosexuality in Britain was a crime until 1967- this puts not just the protagonist’s career on the line but also his life.

Being the first English film to use the word “homosexual” and to openly sympathise with a gay protagonist, it proved highly controversial and was even refused approval from the American Motion Picture Production Code. However, it was allowed entry into various international film festivals and became a hit for its supposed dramatized condemnation of Britain’s homosexuality laws.

There is no doubt that the film played an important role in liberalising attitudes towards the subject throughout the decade…
