In the earliest days of Marvel Studios, when the idea of the MCU was just a spark in Kevin Feige's eye, they were working with two successful directors to create big-screen versions of some of the heroes they still had the rights to. One of these directors was Jon Favreau, whose Iron Man film would be released in 2008 and become one of the most successful films of the decade.

The other director was Edgar Wright, who had been attached to an Ant-Man film as early as 2006. After nearly a decade of prep work, Wright looked to finally be set to bring his distinctive visual style and humor to the MCU. The script was written, the roles were cast, and cameras were ready to roll. Right up until he left the production.

In the years since, Wright has opened up, admitting that Marvel wanted a new writer to do a new draft of his script and that he just wasn't comfortable with the idea of working within the rigid system they had established at the time. Marvel quickly hired Peyton Reed to fill the role and the film went on to be released to decent-sized success but with the constant question of 'what-could-have-been?' looming over it.
