Religion has often been considered one topic too controversial for the dinner table, but it's fair to say that Left Behind, the series of novels by Protestant Reverend Tim LaHaye and Larry B. Jenkins is... problematic. There's no shortage of critics targeting the franchise for its alleged anti-Catholic stance, among other prejudices it carries.

Even those supportive of the novels still tend to find problems with the violence in the books, seemingly glorifying war in rapture fiction.

That's right, for those who don't see movies in church basements, Left Behind is pure, unadulterated rapture fiction that preaches the dangers of leading a non-Protestant life. Such sins will lead to you being blackballed from Heaven, and being left on Earth to contend with the antichrist.

That antichrist, by the way, is the UN Secretary-General, just to give you a sense of where these novels stand politically.

Noted right-wing Christian and nightmare-to-work-with Kirk Cameron immediately signed on for the film version, hawking copies of it during his ministry. But the films, released as a trilogy, had the same distribution power of the Atlas Shrugged trilogy. Read: no one who wasn't already a convert saw it.

The same can be said of the remake, which managed to take advantage of a debt-ridden Nicolas Cage, but didn't sign up any new members.
