10 Films That Were Clearly Vanity Projects

1. After Earth €“ Will & Jaden Smith

after earth box office Will Smith has been one of the most charismatic, witty and charming Hollywood stars over the past 15 years. Blending together his knack for comedy aswell as possessing a seriously proficient acting ability, Smith has gone on to become one of most likeable figures in Hollywood. However due to the success that Will Smith has achieved over the past 15 years, he felt it necessary to introduce his son Jaden into the acting world. Their first appearance together in The Pursuit of Happyness was rather good, a chemistry that never felt forced and Jaden seemingly holding his own despite being a very young age. This has led Jaden to star on his own in the 2010 remake The Karate Kid, a role that through the content and moody atmosphere, allowed Jaden to pass through relatively well. However After Earth is mind-numbingly dull, with the plot moving from one set piece to the next without anything really happening and the dreary, miserable tones emanating from both Smith€™s weighing the film down. Will Smith isn€™t his usual snappy best, instead confined to his spacecraft and barking orders in an oddly creepy British accent. In the meantime, Jaden looks way out of his depth, unable to bring any life to a film that desperately needed it. Any energy or charisma may have seen the film fair a little better but the fact is the project was a dud from the beginning. This film is purely designed to be a push for Jaden to become a leading Hollywood star, to show the world that the Smith family is one embedded with talent. Purely cynical and extremely pretentious, the idea of the Smith clan believing they have produced raw talent reveals a narcissistic and elevated sense of self importance. It takes more than nepotism to make a movie star and the reality is Jaden seemingly doesn€™t possess the talent to be a convincing leading role. It would be very wrong to question whether Jaden wants to be an actor, but he€™s just a kid, let him be one. Oh and M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed this. Unsurprisingly it tanked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZIt20emgLY
