10 Films That Were Clearly Vanity Projects

8. Freddy Got Fingered €“ Tom Green

freddy got fingered Freddy Got Fingered came at arguably the peak of Tom Green€™s career back in 2001. With his early work on The Tom Green Show as well as a prominent role in Road Trip, Green made the step up to leading role and one that produced hideous results. Following the exploits of a cartoonist and his quest for film, the film sinks to new lows in reaching for a laugh. In a comedy the one thing that has to be good are the jokes, it€™s the whole point. Freddy Got Fingered clearly doesn€™t understand this concept and proceeds to show a plethora of hideously unfunny sketches and gross out comedy gags that makes one cringe instead of laugh. Example, a baby being swung around by its umbilical cord. Hilarious stuff. Tom Green being the writer, director and main protagonist within the film must take full responsibility for the awfulness of the film. His vision is one an auteur would have and while this can be successful, Tom Green€™s is one that only a select few would find appealing. While this could be considered admirable, what was produced was merely the consequences of a studio having too much faith. The film was so bad in fact it spawned one of my favourite Roger Ebert quotes. €œThis movie doesn't scrape the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn't the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn't below the bottom of the barrel. This movie doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with barrels€. Atrocious.
