4. Glitter Mariah Carey
Glitter was the 2001 semi-autobiographical film that centred around singer Mariah Carey and her quest to become a singing star. There is undoubtedly a story to be told here, but the way it is portrayed is one that is reminiscent of soap opera TV. A blandly written script that is read back by heroically bad acting performances and what is left is an experience that is both mind-numbingly painful and nauseating. The film really doesnt know what it wants to be - a dramatic, gritty retelling of Mariahs life story or a more campy affair laden with silliness. While the laughably bad ending does provide the only vaguely interesting moments, the film is really dull, creating a strange meta like experience that can be viewed as oddly compelling. The reality is however, there is nothing here of any worth. No doubt, Mariah Carey can sing - its proven every Christmas - but she should really know better and stick to what she is good at. To add insult to injury, Carey subsequently blamed the 9/11 attacks as cause for the failure of the film. While a downright lie - the film was released September 21st - the film did not deserve anybody to take any interest in it whatsoever. Cynically made to be a vehicle for Careys acting career it was ultimately sheer pretentiousness that was duly punished.
