On the quiet, Don Stark has had a surprisingly impressive film/television career that has spanned for decades now and includes over one-hundred acting credits to his name. Of course, every actor has to start somewhere and one of Stark's earliest film roles was in the horror movie Evilspeak.

In the West Andover military academy, cadet Stanley Coopersmith is a social outcast and mistreated by everyone, including his own teachers. It is not until he is punished by cleaning the church cellar that he discovers a book of black mass which inspires him to conjure Satan to get revenge on his adversaries.

Evilspeak does have some notable flourishes, such as the stirring graphics and the exciting ending. Plus, Don Stark actually gives a good performance as Stanley's main bully Bubba. But it overall feels like the producers didn't go far enough with the premise they had.

Clint Howard's performance of the misunderstood Coopersmith is very removed from the character. Featuring such a weak protagonist, it makes the whole story feel really dull and tedious. Ironically, had Evilspeak not become one of the banned "video nasties" of the 1980s, it would have most likely faded into complete obscurity by now.
