2. Pioneer (Erik Skjoldbjærg, 2013) Norway
Pioneer is the newest film by Norwegian film-maker Erik Skjoldbjærg , who is most renown for his film Insomnia (which was later re-made by Christopher Nolan starring Al Pacino). It is his fifth feature film. It will be screened on Fri. 6 at 9:30PM, Sat. 7 at 10:15PM, and Sun. 15 at 3:30PM, as part of the Special Presentation programme. The Friday screening will be the film's International Premiere. The film is a, "gritty drama about the risky experiments and shady dealings that led to the birth of the Norwegian oil-drilling industry in the early 1980s." The dude from Headhunters plays a deep sea diving fanatic, who- with his brother- have been hired to take part in an experiment to see if it's possible to lay pipeline 500M deep on the floor of the North Sea. One member of their team is an American who is working for a multinational corporation that is vying for drilling rights in the area. When the first test goes awry- and the two brothers nearly lose their lives- the main character- Petter- starts to investigate, and he discovers that they have been caught up in a conspiracy that is playing out between the Americans and their own government. With that being said, it ends up, "a conspiracy thriller about the ethical pitfalls of high-stakes investment, acknowledging the financial boon created by the oil industry which made Norway a very wealthy country but intensely sensitive to the costs that accompany compromise." This film looks fucking incredible. Watch the trailer, and see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMTT8DN4CZw
