10 Films You Didn’t Realise Became TV Shows
6. Police Academy: The Series
If seven films didn’t satisfy your Police Academy needs, then maybe two television series based on the 80s slapstick comedy will. Never knowing when to quit, everyone’s favourite academy of layabouts were reintroduced twice on the small screen during the late 80s and 90s.
The first attempt to bring Police Academy to the small screen was the 1988 released animated series that ran for two seasons. The Police Academy animated show was set in-between the fourth and fifth films, though none of the actors were brought in to reprise their roles. Despite its short run, the show is still remembered fondly by fans, but the same can't be said about the series that followed.
By the time the live-action show was rolled out in the 90s, the popularity of the film series had diminished, becoming nothing but a joke, so the idea of a new series succeeding proved a long shot. The Police Academy films, even the first, were met with negative reviews and this series was no different, as critics savaged it from the very first episode. Even the addition of popular characters played by a returning Michael Winslow and cameo appearances from George Gaynes and Art Metrano weren't enough to save it, and it was finally cancelled after 26 episodes.
