10 Films You Didn't Realise Secretly Bombed
7. The Iron Giant

It's time for a Hot Take: The Iron Giant is Vin Diesel's best work.
Forget the multi-billion dollar Fast & Furious franchise, forget anything featuring Riddick or Xander Cage, forget the amount of different ways he can say the line "I am Groot." Vin Diesel has never given a more charismatic, captivating, emotionally complex performance than he did voicing a giant alien robot who eats scrap metal.
Although the story of a "gun with a soul" and the boy who loved him has found its rightful place in the pantheon of animated classics, it failed miserably when it was released in cinemas. Costing $50 million to make, it just about scraped together $31.3 million at the box office.
In fairness to the Warner Brothers film, it was released in 1999. This meant it was competing with both the latter half of the Disney Renaissance, and the rise of Pixar and Dreamworks Animation. There just wasn't room for another animation giant, Iron or not.
It's a damn shame, because this sci-fi-buddy-comedy-slash-cold-war-paranoia-thriller is one of the most deeply affecting animated movies of all time. That beautiful ending never fails to make all of us here at WhatCulture (and by extension, anyone with a heart) bawl our little eyes out.
However, it's not the only film on this list that makes us shed a tear...
