10 Films You Didn't Realise Secretly Bombed
4. The Big Lebowski
Even more so than Fight Club, The Big Lebowski is by far the most quotable and meme-worthy film on this list, and possibly of all time. It is one of those rare films in which every frame is a beautiful painting, and every line is an eloquent phrase.
It is an insanely popular film, loved with an almost religious fervour. It's garnered enough superfans that Kentucky's annual Lebowski Fest has been attracting visitors for almost twenty years running, and inspiring similar celebrations such as The Dude Abides in London. It's even spawned its own mini cinematic universe! Jeff Bridges reprised his role as the Dude in a 2019 SuperBowl ad, while John Turturro wrote, directed, and starred in a spin-off film, The Jesus Rolls, the same year.
Unfortunately, it was a victim of poor timing. The Big Lebowski was released right after Titanic, one of the biggest box office successes of all time. Titanic dominated cinema screens for months, leaving little room for smaller films to compete. The Coen Brothers' magnum opus remained in the shadow of James Cameron's epic romance for a long time before it finally found its audience.
Wow. As if there weren't enough victims of the Titanic already.
