Sequels have and always will be a vital part of the Hollywood ecosystem - the bread and butter that sustains so many studios and producers, keenly giving audiences more of what they dug the first time rather than rolling the dice on something fresh and original.

Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with sequels of course, but there are also so many of them in production and development at any given time that it's simply impossible to keep track of all the ones you might be interested in.

And so with that in mind, here are 20 upcoming movie sequels you probably had no idea were even a thing.

Perhaps the original film was a flop and a follow-up seemed wildly unlikely, maybe the sequel has been so long-delayed we'd all given up hope, or maybe it was just produced under a strange veil of secrecy.

Whatever the reason, these 20 movie sequels are all happening - some have already been shot while others are still a few years off, but they're all finally gaining traction one way or another, even if you'd hardly know it...

Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin may not have set the world on fire back in 2011, but considering it grossed a solid $374 million against a $135 million budget, it seemed like a sequel would come along soon enough.

Peter Jackson was originally set to direct the follow-up after completing his Hobbit trilogy in 2014, yet development stalled in the years that followed, with intermittent updates suggesting that the script was still being worked on while reiterating that Jackson remained attached to helm.

None of this sounded especially convincing, but after years of radio silence on Tintin 2, Jackson stated this past May that he was hard at work on the script with his partner and regular co-scribe Fran Walsh.

He then followed this up with a super encouraging update in July, that the script was completed and it would also be his next directorial effort... whenever that might actually happen.
