In this modern world of constant social media updates and uploads, it was only a matter of time before a film really harnessed the potential horror that could be forged from within the darkness of your own computer screens.

Utilising online video calls, Unfriended put its own spin on the found footage horror genre and created a supernatural threat in the form of a recently deceased student haunting her suspected bullies into admitting who uploaded the video which provoked her demise.

Though Unfriended received mixed reviews - with many critics even branding it as 'exasperating' - people seemed to be quite hooked on the premise and it eventually earned $64 million at the box office and spawned a sequel - which itself earned a reasonable $16 million.

The fact that these two screencast dark horses were both crafted from an overall budget of $2 million, really highlights just how gigantic a success the Skype-slashers genuinely were. They may not go down in history as some of the top horror flicks of their generation, but the series can definitely claim to be yet another sizeable commercial and financial win for Blumhouse Productions.
