10 Forgotten 90s Horror Movies You MUST Watch
1. The Addiction
Abel Ferrera's black-and-white indie kicks off with a philosophy student called Kathleen (Lili Taylor) being bitten by a vampire. While trying to make sense of her new life, she encounters an ancient vamp called Peina (Christopher Walken) who's learned to curb his bloodlust. Not wanting to embrace her dark urges, Kathleen studies Peina's teachings, hoping to maintain her humanity.
Rather than delving into its supernatural roots, The Addiction takes a down-to-earth approach, depicting Kathleen's condition more like a believable craving than a curse. The vampire tropes are there, but Kathleen behaves like a drug addict instead of a traditional bloodsucker, making her plight more relatable.
The monochromatic style fits the narrative perfectly, since Kathleen is trying to find shades of grey in a world that perceives everything in black and white.
Walken is flawless as Kathleen's mentor, coming across as deliciously flamboyant yet grounded, making his profound musings on mortality and the human condition endlessly entertaining.
In the wrong hands, this low-budget flick could've come across as pretentious (especially since it's littered with quotes from Nietzsche and Descartes). Instead, Ferrera created a '90s marvel and arguably his most underrated film. The gore and violence may be minimal, but The Addiction has more bite than the majority of vampire movies.
