If Star Wars had ended with the end of the original trilogy in 1983, then its place as one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time would be secure. But it didn't. It was never going to do. Because money.

Instead, 16 years after Luke and his pals freed the forest moon of Endor, Star Wars was back and it was total poo. At its heart, The Phantom Menace had a good story, but it was bogged down with boring politics, endless debate scenes, and Jar Jar Binks.

Once the first Star Wars prequel was released, there was no turning back. Attack of the Clones was next, rendering any Star Wars fan unable to look at sand without bursting out laughing. Then came Revenge of the Sith and the "high ground", before the shockingly-awful sequel trilogy and the deluge of Disney+ content that has followed.

Judged on its own merit, The Phantom Menace is a bad movie. However, if you take into account all the badness it unleashed onto the world, then it is one of the greatest evils of all time.
