10 French Horror Movies You Need To Watch
8. Évolution (Evolution)
2015 Lynchian thriller Évolution takes place in a seaside town populated by women and boys who all look and dress the same. The children are routinely taken to hospital for procedures whose true purpose is unknown.
When one of the boys, Nicholas, sees a dead body in the ocean, he suddenly starts questioning everything he thought he knew about his home. After being befriended by a nurse, Nicholas starts to learn the truth behind the town.
Évolution has elements of Dark City and The Island, throwing the audience into a fantastical world that's slowly exposed as something else entirely, and the lingering mystery is unveiled at a gradual rate that makes every scene utterly riveting.
What makes this sci-fi horror deeply effective is its ability to tap into a childlike fear of the unknown. It's evident from the get-go that the kids have an unwavering trust of the adults, and, as a result, it's horrifying to watch them forcibly endure surgical procedures, acknowledging they have no autonomy over their body but not understanding why.
With a plethora of grotesque visuals thrown into the mix, the already creepy flick is elevated into pure nightmare-fuel territory.
