10 French Horror Movies You Need To Watch
5. La Nuit A Dévoré Le Monde (The Night Eats The World)
The zombie subgenre has remained consistently popular since the 1960s. And yet, it's tricky to find an organic way to diversify the undead formula, as almost every zombie flick involves a group either fighting off a flesh-eating horde or seeking a shelter untouched by the plague.
But one movie that tries something different is La nuit a devore le monde, a film better known as The Night Eats the World, although the direct translation is The Night Has Devoured the World.
After Paris is hit with a zombie virus, antisocial civilian Sam is left alone in his flat. Instead of finding allies or facing off against a wave of reanimated corpses, Sam decides to wait out the apocalypse, sensibly stockpiling rations, creating barricades, jogging to stay fit, and collecting rainwater to keep himself hydrated. Unfortunately, weeks in isolation causes Sam's mind to deteriorate, compelling him to have imaginary conversations and intense hallucinations.
The premise is outlandish but this depressing drama offers a realistic depiction of how a person would function (or at least try to) after the world goes to hell. The zombie invasion brings an unmistakable physical danger but the story highlights the mental toll has on the protagonist. Even though there isn't much action, it's one of the freshest takes on the zombie genre in years.
