9. Life Of Brian

Shaun Of The Dead Nick Frost Simon Pegg
Warner Bros.

One need only look out the window to see that many so called followers of Jesus kinda completely missed the point of everything he was trying to say and pretty much always have.

Life Of Brian is Monty Python's brilliant satire of this. Religion and religious figures like Jesus aren't the ones in its crosshairs but rather the followers thereof. In fact, Jesus barely appears, and when he does, he does literally nothing wrong. The fault is squarely on his followers for misinterpreting everything they hear from him, and then obsessing over the titular Brian because they're convinced HE'S the real messiah for various hilarious reasons.

Life Of Brian is one of the best satires of religion ever made because of how it perfectly captures the large scale feeling of Hollywood golden age bible films like The Ten Commandments, while not losing sight of the satire. Hell, if anything, the two perfectly complement each other. The film truly earns the right to be the birthplace of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life, because as cynical as it is, it still remains optimistic.
