10 Genius Blockbuster Movie Subversions
9. Blockers
What You Thought
John Cena's name being attached to a comedy about parents preventing their children from having sex, was an odd move, it must be said. WWE stars in movies always had a somewhat... patchy record, after all. So it was easy to chalk this one up to just being another exercise in massaging a wrestler's ego when they assumed they could do funny.
What It Actually Was
Blockers turned out to be a star-making turn for Cena on the big-screen as it showcased his comedic timing and ability to be more than just the muscle (taking inspiration from his now, good friend, The Rock) - he could play a caring, bumbling father who we could empathise with. The ensemble also have a chemistry not dissimmilar to that of the Hangover crew, all bringing out the mirth in each other's performance.
Anyone who can sit through Cena's Butt Chug scene without cracking a smile deserves a medal and so does this movie for delivering something way better than it had any right to be.
