As far as Ridley Scott's movies go, The Last Duel is at the top of the list neither in terms of critical reception nor commercial success. However, it is actually a fascinating and unique watch as the same story is told from the perspectives of the three main characters.

The basis of the story revolves around Jacques le Gris (Adam Driver) sexually assaulting Marguerite de Carrouges (Jodie Comer), and how her husband Sir Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) chose to react to it.

The first chapter tells the story from Jean's perspective, where he is portrayed as an honourable man wronged by his former friend, le Gris, and once he found out about the assault, he did what he could to support his wife in her pursuit of justice. When the third chapter comes around, though, telling Marguerite's truth, it's revealed that Jean was far from the man he claimed himself to be.

Upon hearing the news that his wife was r*ped, he took it as a personal insult against himself, brushing aside his wife's trauma and devastation to further his rivalry with his former friend. Instead of going to the King with the matter, he chose the much more personal duel to the death, knowing full well that his loss would result in his wife being burned alive. He blamed her for the entire thing, and cared nothing about her own feelings, but instead valued his pride much more.

It could have been left that with three different versions of the truth, there would be no way of knowing who was genuinely being honest, though the words 'the truth' staying just a second after the rest of the words had melted away from Marguerite's title card tells you all you need to know.
