10 Great 2024 Horror Movies You Probably Missed
2. Lowlifes
Most people regard Tubi as a third-rate streaming service, and its questionable catalogue lends credence to this observation. However, the platform in recent times has tried to add some prestige to its inner workings, and the horror film Lowlifes was a good place to start.
This unambiguously bloody Tesh Guttikonda and Mitch Kaplan-helmed streaming offering follows two families from different sides of the urban-rural divide. The movie does not say anything particularly novel about the contrast between city dwellers and people from the farmland, other than its twist on who is committing the gory kills.
Beyond that twist (and the inevitable commentary that comes with it), this cannibal-centric story features gruesome effects work, a surprising but effectively dark sense of humour, and decent performances, especially from Amanda Fix (Amy) and Breanna Llewellyn (Savannah).
Additionally, the technical features (such as the previously mentioned effects work) are surprisingly polished, and a far cry from what Tubi usually puts out. Lowlifes is not a game changer, but that does not take away from its delightfully schlocky entertainment value.
