1. Is It Still Following? - It Follows

Released in 2015, It Follows is one of the best horror movies of the last decade.

The film follows Jay (Maika Monroe), who after having sex in a car with new boyfriend Hugh (Jake Weary), wakes up tied to a chair and is told that when they had sex a demonic, shapeshifting entity was passed on to her and is now slowly and steadily following her. When it catches up to her it will kill her and then proceed to target the person who passed the curse on to her.

What follows is a nerve-shredding, tense journey as Jay, her sister Kelly, and their friends Yara and Paul attempt to both evade the entity and to discover its origins and put an end to the cursed chain of followings.

After numerous failed attempts to stop the creature, including a nail-biting showdown in an abandoned public pool, we see Jay and Paul having sex, allowing the curse to pass between them.

The final cliffhanger scene shows them walking down the street hand in hand. As they walk silently, we see a figure in the distance walking towards them before the chilling score kicks in and the credits roll, leaving their fate to our imagination.

In refusing to show us a true end to Jay’s dilemma, the film hammers home the true exhaustion and inevitability of being pursued by an unstoppable force, lingering in the mind longer than any third act monster defeat ever could.
