4. Dredd
What Its About: Tasked with taking down a drug dealer at the top of a high-rise apartment building, this futuristic film follows Judge Dredd, a one-man judge, jury and, executioner. Accompanying him is his rookie partner Anderson, who uses her psychic abilities to help them navigate a a series of increasingly dangerous levels on their way to the top. Why Its Great: It takes a simple premise, a couple well-written characters, and unleashes some insane slow-motion action. The style in particular needs to be commended - the approach to very graphic violence is inspired. As a result, the film is a breeze to watch, never letting up on the combat scenes, but still managing to find a strong emotional core. Why Youll Never Watch It Again: Theres a better version of Dredd that already exists and its called The Raid. The Indonesian film that was released at the same time as Dredd has literally the exact same plot minus the futuristic trappings. And while Dredds action sequences were good, The Raids are on a whole other level, making it hard to justify watching Dredd again instead.
