10 Great Directors Who Keep Making Terrible Movies

To be fair to Henry Joost, fellow film makers Eduardo Sanchez and Orin Peli also struggled to follow up their bombshell debut hits.

What does Joost have in common with the directors of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity? Well, his debut Catfish also relied on a gimmick in order to succeed with audiences.

The co-director showed some incredible promise with the 2010 documentary debut, a gripping (and maybe fake) hit which followed a naive filmmaker as he discovered his online crush was a loner's fictional invention.

But all that came from this promise in the years since is a set of lesser Paranormal Activity sequels and two corny online thrillers, Nerve and Viral. The Paranormal Activity gigs make sense, as Joost proved he didn't need a big budget to build tension. And the online thrillers speak to his experience as the creator of a documentary detailing the creepy reality of online life.

So, er, why are all four of these later films tension-free, uninvolving flops which were dismissed by critics and forgotten by audiences?
