10 Great Films That Already Flew Under The Radar In 2016

Actor turned director Matt Ross won the Best Director in Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival for Captain Fantastic, but his fourth effort as a helmer has thus far escaped the notice of the general movie-going public. Far from the comic book movie the title may suggest, the film stars Lord of the Rings' Viggo Mortensen as Ben Cash, a father who decides to raise his six children off the grid after his bipolar wife is hospitalised.

When Ben finds out that his wife has committed suicide in hospital, he decides to take his family on a road trip to New Mexico where their mother's funeral is set to take place, against the wishes of his father-in-law. Ben is forced to reevaluate his children's future after their taste of the wider world leaves them wanting more from life.

Ross' screenplay was criticised by some for having too-facile a resolution, though Captain Fantastic more than makes up for the odd misstep with an abundance of humour and heart, shining a light on the pitfalls of parenting in modern day America. One of the few Hollywood actors capable eliciting both pity and disdain in such extremes, Mortensen is perfectly cast in a role tailor-made for his abilities.
