10 Great Films That Already Flew Under The Radar In 2016

2. Everybody Wants Some!!

From Ethan Hawke to his long-time friend and collaborator Richard Linklater, director of the Sunset trilogy and coming-of-age epic Boyhood. He dubbed his follow-up to Boyhood a spiritual sequel to his box office flop turned cult classic Dazed and Confused, though it didn't get anywhere near as much attention as the original has, despite the following that Dazed has amassed over the years and Linklater's stellar reputation.

Set in Linklater's native Texas in the fall of 1980, the film follows freshman Jake (Blake Jenner), a talented pitcher who is ready to join his college team, the fictional Southeast Texas Cherokees. After moving into his student housing with a number of his new teammates, he soon finds himself chasing bases both on and off the baseball field.

Everybody Wants Some!! has all the Linklater trademarks, full of unbridled nostalgia worked around a plot that doesn't really go anywhere (the characters simply stroll through the movie, day to day, party to party) yet somehow never feels lacking, a laid-back approach to storytelling that has worked well for the director over the course of his career to date.

One thing Linklater has proven time and again is that he knows how to get a tune out of young actors, and not one of his ensemble cast miss a step here. It isn't the greatest film of his career, but it certainly deserved more attention than it ultimately got.
