10 Great Films Under 95 Minutes Long

3. My Neighbour Totoro (86 Mins)

Phantasm Movie
Studio Ghibli

This 1988 film by acclaimed animators, Studio Ghibli, is a full-on charm offensive. It’s a film which is slight on plot, focusing instead on atmosphere and a small cast of typically endearing Ghibli characters.

A family moves from the city to the countryside, hoping the clean air will improve their mother’s failing health. When exploring their new house and the surrounding countryside they encounter Totoro, an adorably chonky cat-rabbit-bear creature which acts as the guardian spirit for the nearby forest. You’ll recognise Totoro as the mascot featuring on Studio Ghibli’s logo.

The two sisters go on a series of adventures with Totoro and company. Towards the end of the film some mild peril is introduced, and you’ll find yourself close to tears hoping everything turns out well.

It’s a must watch if you’re a fan Studio Ghibli - a truly uplifting film which will make you happier by the time the credits roll than when you started.
