10 Great Harry Potter Characters That We Never Got To See On Screen

House elves got a raw deal when it came to the transition from page to screen. Given that the first two films were largely faithful adaptations, Dobby appeared prominently in Chamber Of Secrets but then disappeared until reappearing to make his heroic sacrifice in Deathly Hallows, limiting the impact of one of the book's most poignant deaths. Kreacher was then slashed from the Order Of The Phoenix before he was given a cameo at Rowling's insistence given his subsequent importance to Regulus Black's previous acquisition of a Horcrux.

Neither of the other two semi-prominent elves from the book even got a mention. Hokey and her master, Hepzibah Smith, were not utilised for one of the flashbacks to Voldemort's past in Half Blood Prince, whilst Barty Crouch Sr's elf, Winky, who plays a substantial part in the Crouch family tragedy, didn't show up in Goblet Of Fire (cutting her after that could've been forgiven given that she was largely superfluous from then onwards).

As a result, one of Hermione's defining subplots, her creation of the Society For The Promotion Of Elvish Welfare (SPEW) was omitted from the screen entirely. Dull in places, it nevertheless hammered home an allegorically scathing criticism of the class system and slavery, highlighting general ignorance of the issues of inequality that surround us all.
